(Family Beaver - Castor fiber)

Description : 

  • Heavy, stocky build
  • Flattened tail, broad (12-16 cm) naked and scaled 
  • Webbed toes
  • Outer fur gray black or very dark brown, lighter undercoat
  • Stomach fur denser than the fir of the back
  • Coat "greased" by gland secretion
  • Total body length: 75-90 cm
  • Tail: 28-38 cm
  • Weight: 12-38 kg

Habitat And Characteristics:

  • Running or standing water of at least 1.5 m deep surrounded by willows, aspen, poplar, ash, birch, alder and bushes
  • Water bodies must not freeze completely or dry out
  • Mostly active at twilight or nigh time
  • Lives with partner or family     
  • Excellent swimmer and diver
  • In France, lives in simple burrows or dens whose entrances are concealed by branches
  • Low activity in winter

Diet :

  • Purely plant (bark, twigs, leaves, aquatic plants)

Reproduction :

  • Copulation in the water between January and March
  • Gestation: 15 weeks
  • Small litters born from January to May     
  • Suckled to about 2 months
  • Independent in the third year
  • Sexual maturity at 3 or 4 years
  • Longevity: 20 years in the wild (35 in captivity)
